Recently, I was pointed to a piece of viral marketing done by a local company here in the Raleigh, NC area, Cree, Inc. Cree is a solid company that hits impressive revenue and profit numbers but isn’t a Fortune 500. They are what many could classify from a revenue and employee standpoint (about 3,100 according to Yahoo Finance) as a medium enterprise. Call them what you want but I will say this, they know how to use video to make a point.
Why is this important? Well, because many ties companies venture into video to “go viral”. They try to entertain rather than enlighten. As a result, many times corporate video efforts fall well short of the mark.
Not a Cree though. Ginny Skalski, social media specialist at Cree, has put together a rare find. It’s a video that entertains and enlightens because it makes a point about the product it is demonstrating: LED lighting. Not the most sexy subject but take a look.

After I watched that video I said to myself, “Now that’s how social media is done.”
Thanks, Cree, for giving us an example of why we even consider social media video as an option. It’s to sell products and services. It’s not to make someone say “Cool!” then forget two seconds later who provided that cool moment. Nope. It’s about telling a story that is short, to the point and on target.
Thanks, Ginny and the folks at Cree for doing business rather than just making movies.
