Blogs Are USELESS! Thanks for The Update …………………. I Guess

Blogging Just To Hear MyselfWell, I would have to say that this has been an interesting week. Interesting weeks can be fun or they can be tedious or they can be a combination of the two. This has been a very even mix. As a small business owner myself I encounter a lot of the same situations that you do on a daily basis. These situations are frustrating at their worst and invigorating at their best. As with most things they often land squarely in the middle. At least, the ones that stick do.

So get to the point already, right? Here it is. I was told in no uncertain terms by someone who is a marketing expert that blogs are useless. I may be paraphrasing here but that was definitely the spirit. This was done in front of a panel of other small business owners during a presentation I was making. My question was “Well, in what verticals do you say that they don’t work?” The answer I received was an emphatic “All of them!” I was stunned. First, any marketing person who makes a blanket statement on a communication vehicle that has true viability is on shaky ground at best. Other than that I was just…….stunned. What do you say to that without crossing a line? I try to always take the high road. This time, at least, mission accomplished.

My take on this statement is that I simply couldn’t disagree more. Are blogs the perfect solution for everyone? Not even close. In fact, there is so much blog noise out there (to which I admit, I may just be a contributor) that it can be hard to be heard amidst the din of everyone typing at the same time. But like anything else, I believe that is always room for one more ……..good one (Thank you, Big Al Shikiar, for letting me borrow that one for a lot of years ;-) )

COMMENT FODDER: I want some feedback here. Are blogs really worth it? What are the best ways to use them? What are great examples of strong blogs? When should they NOT be used? Would love to hear what you think.

SMB Takeaway: Although you may not like blogs or the idea of blogging, you should still consider doing one. The value is immeasurable since there are so many ways it can assist your marketing efforts.
