I am starting to realize that often the reason for inaction from an SMB (small / medium business) regarding
anything whether it’s search marketing, social media, blogging or whatever is a result of boredom.
This sounds odd since most entrepreneurs or people with great responsibility within an organization are there because of their passion. Either they started the business or they have reached a level of success in the organization that can only be done through an extreme zeal for success.
Maybe so but what started as passion can drift into indifference or even boredom. We are always seeking to find the next mountain to climb and problem to conquer. Trouble is that when we get there we always feel like there has to be more. If you chase your tail for long enough you get bored. Even a stupid dog tires of chasing his tail because he is 1) tired and 2) bored silly.
So how do you reinvigorate or wake up that passion that once existed? The first step might be to, dare I say, blog about it. If you are looking for an outlet to get the creative juices flowing again a blog can do that. In a blog you can help yourself more than anyone else by
- Reliving past successes – Not only is it fun for you to go back to the times where you still had that zest for the work but customers and prospects like it too. They want to know who you are and why your company was the right choice for them to make.
- Inviting team members to participate – People like to be part of something bigger. Sure there will be some complainers about having to write but that may serve to weed out those who are not on board for the new you.
- Experiment with new ideas – Blogs are great places to throw something against the wall to see if it sticks. You can get some feedback from your customers or anyone else for that matter. Just remember to be thick skinned on this one. Not everyone will jump on board and some may ridicule.
- Highlight important team members – Nothing helps people more than recognition and it often helps just as much to supply the recognition.
Is this a guaranteed winner? Absolutely not. Nothing is. It beats spending your days navel gazing and wondering why the thrill is gone. Don’t think about it, blog about it!
FT Takeaway – Get up and get moving. Business is tough enough as it is without sitting around wondering why it’s not like it used to be. Get over it. It just isn’t like it used to be so it’s time to move on into the 21st century. Kick and scream all you want but you will have to adapt to get that old flame started again.
