I am not sure what I want to accomplish with this post. I say that because the deeper I get into the local Internet marketing side of the SMB world the more I realize that there is a tremendous chasm separating the industry (including service providers like Google, SMB marketing agencies and consultants) and the end user, the SMB.
This needs to end.
My question to SMB’s, not industry insiders or service providers, but actual business owners and operators, what would truly help them in getting the knowledge and understanding of the Internet space that could help their business grow? Is it a seminar that is built just for them? What I mean is that there would be no Internet marketing industry ‘insider presentations’. As a result there would be real people talking in workaday language addressing the needs of real SMB owners and marketers.
I think I have an idea. What about an Internet marketing Gong Show? The longer a person / presenter makes sense the longer they can stay on. As soon as they drift into industry mumbo-jumbo and start talking in terms only other people like themselves would get, they get gonged by a panel of impartial SMB’s and they are booed off the stage. Only providers committed to really helping the SMB would survive and then would be allowed to present to others in the second half of the day.
Sounds silly doesn’t it? I say it’s no more silly than nearly every conference I have ever been to that talks in a language that only industry insiders understand thus doing absolutely nothing to advance the cause.
So who’s with me? The SMB Internet Marketing Gong Show. Would it work?
