I have been working lately on this series of posts helping to recognize different social media activities and habits through the colors of the spectrum. It’s been interesting to touch on these ideas. It has also made me more self aware about my own behaviors in the social media world. This week I fell into the ‘those who can’t do teach’ category which is not where I want to be.
As a week in review session occurred unscheduled in my head I was a little disappointed in myself. For some reason I was a little too edgy and aggressive in my work this week. What I mean is I wrote in a manner that was more in the offensive mode. That has its time and place. I think I did it more for effect than anything else.

Ok, could someone tell me why I received a call today from a telemarketer for muscatel wines (they didn’t even say the company’s name before they hung up on me, just blurted out the product they were hawking when I asked)?
First of all, I vaguely remember a No Call List that I am on. Over the years though I think aggressive ‘marketers’, otherwise known as cold-calling closers, have started to ignore this a bit more. Second, I don’t drink alcohol so there is no threat of being a customer in the past 90 days (unless my kids are hitting the sauce behind my back, hmmmm). And third, it was obviously a boiler room environment that the call came from with all the requisite ‘selling noise’ in the background. What is this, 1980? Maybe this economy has truly hit rock bottom as companies try techniques that were last effective (and barely at that) during the last major recession.

Starting today I will be getting an opportunity to write for a another blog, the HubSpot Inbound Internet Marketing Blog. I’m excited to be asked to be part of such a dynamic blog that truly addresses the real needs of businesses from SMB’s to the enterprise as it relates to all aspects of Internet marketing. I will be focusing on some of the news of the Internet marketing and social media industries as HubSpot looks to expand its blog so it can keep its growing company on its current upward swing. This is a trial run so don’t be afraid to head over there and check it out.
In addition to client work and writing for Andy Beal’s Marketing Pilgrim plus Mike Moran’s Biznology blog my days are pretty full. There’s room for more though as I work on trying to build a community in an area that is very close to my heart. I’ll share that experience as it gets under way.

I am not going to judge Tiger Woods. That is not something I have the right to do.
I will say, however, that with his ‘announcement’ on his website today I think he is getting some bad advice. He wrote a combination ‘mea culpa’ and condemnation of his lack of privacy due to his celebrity.

With everything in the world being identified through some affiliation or association I have spent a little time looking at social media through the colors of the spectrum. No I am not tripping and seeing ‘wild colors’. I instead have decided to try to expand how I look at social media and see who might come along for the ride.
I have looked at social media through a green, red and blue lens thus far and today it’ll be addressing the yellow side of social media.
The yellow side of social media? Well, rather than scratch our heads about it let’s dive in. [click to continue…]

I did something a little weird today. Weird for me at least. You see back in my NJ days I used to really like the music of a Central Jersey musician Chris Harford. I saw him play a few times and I tried to keep up with his music as best I could in the pre-Internet days.
Well, I am now about 10 years removed from NJ but Chris Harford’s music is still played in my house and enjoyed by my family. The fact that the guy is really talented doesn’t hurt of course and I highly recommend checking him out for a real change of pace from the crud that is passed off as music these days but I digress. The other day was piddling around on Facebook and ‘found’ him. So I asked him to be my ‘friend’. Being a musician it was unlikely he would decline so he became my ‘friend’. Look, I know we’re not friends but there is a connection because he is willing to create and put himself out there for others to enjoy (or criticize). That’s risky business. Check out this live performance of one of my favorites.

Continuing my silly series on how social media will reveal your true colors (I’ve already looked at the green and red aspects of the medium so feel free to peruse), today I will take a look at my personal favorite color blue.
Ever since I was a kid blue has been my favorite color but only in the darker blue sense. What does that mean? Well, I am not a light blue kind of guy. No baby blue or Carolina blue (I am a Boston College alum so nothing with Carolina in it is a favorite unless attached to the word ‘loses’). I’m talkin’ regular old blue like blue jeans, New York Giants blue and even (I can’t believe I will admit this one) royal blue like the New York Mets (yes I am a fan still so commence laughing now).

Stupid headline, I know, but hopefully it got your attention.
What am I giving to? World Vision. My family sponsors a child for $35 / month to help them get out of the abject poverty that they endure. Is this about me? Nope. It’s about helping someone other than me. Honestly, I get sick of me so this works out really well.

I started a little ‘series’ of posts that are designed to look into the idea that no matter what you do in life your true colors will always be seen. In other words, you can run but you can’t hide. I have way too much experience seeing people say and do one thing then when the rubber met the road they did a “Jekyll and Hyde” on me and I saw them for what they really were. Of course, that often ends in disappointment.
So what’s this have to do with social media? Well, I think that the medium exposes people in the absolute best and absolute worst lights and it is completely up to the individual as to which light they stand under.

My wife reminded me of a person from our past who simply touched us both because she was good to us and sincere. Now almost 20 years since I last spoke to her, I am reminded of words she spoke often but are just as true today as they were then: No matter what is said or done, true colors always come out.
Honestly, I was too young and ignorant at the time to even get that. Now, I have a few more years on me and little more awareness in me and I really appreciate Evelyn’s words. In particular, I am seeing it more and more as the Internet ‘evolves’. I use the term evolves loosely because honestly, in some cases I think the way we use this tool has set human kind back centuries but that’s for another day.
