Post Super Bowl Twitter Hangover

by Frank Reed on February 7, 2011

Yesterday during the Super Bowl I got involved in some back and forth on Twitter regarding ads and halftime shows and more.

Today, I regret it.

I am a football fan and I actually let social media take me away from a pretty decent football game and that’s not good. More importantly, I am a husband and a father and I let social media take me from an incredible family and that’s a tragedy.

Why is that not good? It’s because I can’t really see the value of ‘talking’ about commercials etc, even with Groupon’s disastrous spot that looked like an insensitive take on struggles of the Tibetan people. Rather than sitting and being more engaged with my family who was in the room watching with me I was more engaged with people in a virtual way. That’s a bad result.

Today I feel like I have a Twitter and social media hangover. I imbibed too much and now I look back on the evening and I am having a tough time seeing the value of the trade-off I decided to make with regard to who I actually interacted with during the game.

This is no gripe against social media or Twitter. They are what they are. It’s how I choose to use them and when that is the issue here. Right now, as I piece together the night before in a haze of tweets and pithy comments (better defined as ATTEMPTS at pithy comments) I am not satisfied with the result much like I used to be after a night of being a little to social in the drinking department.

So here’s to social media in moderation moving forward because too much of it makes me feel bad. That’s just the truth.

Thanks for listening. My name is Frank and I am a social media-holic. (I can hear you all saying in unison “HI FRANK!”)

Haha – to funny Frank : )

I thought I would share a post you may have missed today — http://dimepr.com/x/17x Seems some strange social/mobile addictions are spreading like wildfire : p

Take two aspirin, slam two tall cold beers and you’ll feel better in the morning.

Cheers to you!

Mark – I’m not sure your Avatar shows your best side. :O)

Frank, thankfully it wasn’t Twitter for me, but we all have those things that take as away. And you’ve made the first, big step. Realizing it and moving forward.

I have problems sometimes when I am so focused on a task that I snap at people when they come into my room. I’m working to be better at that.

BTW, Donald Trump was on Oprah yesterday. What impressed me the most, was despite being a work-a-holic his kids were always allowed to interrupt him. They said he could have been finishing a major deal or talking to the President, but he would always pause if they came into the room.

Thanks for coming forward and causing us all to reflect for a moment.
