A study was performed by Adobe to see just what people do with their mobile devices.
Number 1 result is that they use social media channels. That’s fine but since most social media activities are time wasters and not real good indicators of whether someone is looking to buy, we all need to take notice of the second most common use for these mobbile users (courtesy of eMarketer).
People who are accessing their mobile devices while actually out doing something are interested in maps and establishments reviews. They are looking to buy and they are making decisions on the fly. If they are looking to Google to access maps and establishment reviews (which 70% of searchers do and I bet dollars to donuts that 70% contains the best prospects as well) then they are going to encounter a Place Page for a business.
If that page is not optimized that business could lose. If it is, there is no guarantee of getting the business but it goes a long way toward moving that prospect closer to that business.
If you are still unsure about how important a Place Page is to businesses of all sizes please contact me. You may actually learn something to help your bottom line.

It’s so important for a business to have a presence in local search. Running the risk of losing to the next guy all because you don’t have an online local presence, is a shame. It’s so easy to get out there and create local profiles that will keep you in the running. If you don’t know what you are doing or are new to the online marketing game, consult a professional.
Amen, Nick.
Funny thing is that the “it’s so easy part” only seems that way to people like us who deal with it every day. Many SMB’s (in fact most) still don’t understand and that is our fault as an industry for talking over their heads. Oh, that and coming across as condescending “know it alls” when we act shocked if they don’t already know this.
Our industry needs A LOT of work done in this area of communication between the pros and the people needing the pros. Until that bridge is built there will always be a disconnect and a lower adoption rate of online marketing in the SMB space.
Thanks for coming by.
Hey Frank,
What I meant to say by “it’s so easy” is that profiles, while not easy to execute properly without knowing the important pieces needed, are something that should be a top priority for a business owner when looking to make an impact on local search. I agree with you, though, communication in our industry, and the fact that there are still those who don’t understand the benefits of search marketing efforts.
